:: WordPress-phpMyAdmin

Introduction

I put this together because I wanted to have access to phpMyAdmin from the admin console in WordPress. I was basically getting sick and tired of separate logins and windows in order to access the database directly.

It is a very simple plugin to use. Follow the instructions for installing it and away you go! You don't even have to go through the trouble of going through their setup script or creating their config file. Everything has been done for you and the settings from your WordPress setup will be passed over.

Some of the features have been removed or changed slightly for things to work and to maintain security. However you'll find that most of the things you are used to are still available. Due to the changes that I made, you will only be able to access the phpMyAdmin console from within your WordPress admin console. Trying to link directly will bomb!

If you need help on using phpMyadmin, please go to their site and you will find extensive documentation on how to use it.

If you are feeling generous after trying this plugin out, please support my efforts through the donate link you see on my site. I've been cracking the code out on my free time, so even a small token amount is appreciated.

Hope you find this useful. Let me know if you have any problems or have suggestions for improving it! Thanks!

Download

WP-phpMyAdmin version 2.8.2 has been downloaded 30125 times!

Installation

1. Extract the files and transfer the 'wp-phpmyadmin' folder to your plugins folder.
2. Log into your admin panel and click on 'Activate'.
3. Goto the 'Manage' tab of your admin console and you'll find phpMyAdmin.

Language Support

phpMyAdmin has the ability to support multiple languages. For this plugin I have included the files for only the following languages:

1) English
2) Chinese simplified and traditional
3) French
4) German
5) Japanese
6) Korean
7) Spanish

I did this because providing the full set of languages was putting a strain on my bandwidth and was starting to cost me money on the hosting side. As I provide this plugin for free, and since no one seems to be donating, the best thing that I could do was to remove some of the languages.

If you need to use other languages, you will need to download the phpMyAdmin (Version 2.8.2) file from the phpMyAdmin site. After unzipping the file, go to the 'lang' directory and copy the language file that you need to the 'lang' directory for the WP-phpMyAdmin plugin. Becareful not to delete or overwrite other files as they have been modified to work within WordPress. If you are unsure of this, do get in touch with me and I'll try to help you.

nice stuff
took me several ‘activate plugin’ tries before it kicked in
but eventually it did, so it’s not a major flaw

Hello Chris i love the plugin,it’s saving a lot of time on db related movement. And i’d like to switch to full screen when dealing with phpmyadmin, can i do that?

:: flavien
Wed, 19th July 2006

flavien,
Unfortunately the plugin was designed only to work from within the admin console. I did this as a security measure because I didn’t want direct access to the phpmyadmin directory. I wasn’t able to adequately protect it with a plugin, and the techy skills of users differ so I didn’t want to complicate the install for them, lest I end up introducing a door for hackers. You can however increase the size of the box it is in by deleteing the div that surround the iframe in the wp-phpmyadmin file.

good,that works! tks chris:)

This looks extremely promising. Any chance the readme file could be explanded to detail which files may be omitted and which are required? There are 124 language files. Can most of those be ignored?

Hey,

Sweet plugin. Thanks a lot!

Take Care,

Joefish,
I’ll update the readme file next release. I’ve not actually fooled around with deleting files yet, but I’m quite sure that you can delete the language files that you don’t use. You’ll find them in the ‘lang’ directory. As for some other files you caould probably delete the capitalised text files and the php files that come with them.

Hey,

Oddly it has started to take me to the phpmyadmin login page when when I click phpmyadmin in the manage tab in wp. Even if I supply the correct user id and pw it fails with:

#2005 - Unknown MySQL server host ‘WP_HOST’ (1)

I’ve changed nothing on my end and was working fine yesterday. :(

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Will

Hello:
I’ve activated your plugin, and I’m getting the following errors…
Warning: mcrypt_encrypt(): Size of key is too large for this algorithm in /home/u2/urbanl/html/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-phpmyadmin/phpmyadmin/libraries/mcrypt.lib.php on line 73

Fatal error: mcrypt_encrypt(): Mcrypt initialisation failed in /home/u2/urbanl/html/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-phpmyadmin/phpmyadmin/libraries/mcrypt.lib.php on line 73

I’m guessing that part of it may be that the Wordpress index.php file is on the root level, outside of the wordpress subdirectory. How should I proceed? Thanks.

:: Velanche
Sun, 23rd July 2006

Andres,
You need to copy the entire wp-phpmyadmin directory (after unzipping) to your plugins directory. From what I can see you only copies one file.

:: silpstream
Sun, 23rd July 2006

Velanche,
I sent you a replacement file via email to install. The problem is not your WP paths but in fact has to do the the key that was being generated for your site. The new file should sort it out.

great plug-in. Would be good if it there was an option to open it in a separate window though. It feels very cramped compared to the full-screen version I currently use. And with some of the large table structures some of the display gets cropped and there are no scroll buttons to go further right - although I can use the cursor keys.

Thanks for all your work into putting this plugin together! I have a problem with getting it to work. I activated it and access the console, however, I’m getting an error: “Not found. The requested URL /blog/wp-content/plugins/wp-phpmyadmin/phpmyadmin/ was not found on this server.”

Any help would be most appreciated.

Sun, 06th August 2006

Oops - I returned this evening to find that my inquiry from my last visit disappeared. I’ll restate it again: after installing your plugin for phpMyAdmin, I attempted to access it as instructed in my administrative panel, but I received a Not Found error. Any help you can offer me is most appreciated. Thank you!

When I go to the myPHP link in my Admin screen, what I get is a photo of my page, instead of the phpAdmin dialogue. Do you guys think you could help me out with this? I’m not sure why it’s doing that.

Answers to last batch of questions.
Those with WPHOST errors I’ll be emailing you seperately so I hope you gave me the right address. Those with file not found or are seeing their own pages, It should be because you didn’t transfer the entire wp-phpmyadmin directory into you plugin directory. For anyone that is gettin an ‘add_action’ error, I believe that it has to do with the WP version you use. This was only created for v2.0.3 as That is what I use.

:: silpstream
Tue, 08th August 2006

Ken,
The comments is done with a plugin called ‘AJAX Comments’. I modified it for my theme, but overall most of the functionality is the same. You should be able to find it at WP-Plugins.net

I installed the plugin, and everything is working.

However, when I tried to run a command on the SQL to alter a table it said “Access denied to user …@localhost

How can i fix it?

:: Daniel
Wed, 16th August 2006

Okay, i’ve uploaded the entire folder to my plugins directory as directed in your install instructions and have activated the plugin, but all I get is a blank window when I click on the “phpmyadmin” link in the “Manage” section of the control panel. I’ve deactivated and re-activated the plugin 5 times so far and still only get a blank page… what gives?

:: Krunch
Wed, 16th August 2006

Krunch,
That’s the first time I’ve heard of such a problem. It sounds like it can’t find the page. I’m curious; could you tell me the type of page that shows up for your install when you get a 404 error? Also can you check that all the files got successfully transferred? Possibly some file is missing and is causing a problem. Finally could you send me your URL? I’d like to see if I can check things from my end for you. Send me an email, my address is in the read me file. Cheers!

Dude, your fix works, awesome plugin!!!!!

Thanks for the quick response and fix.
Maybe you should add the fix to the instructions….the PHPMYADMIN people have you manually addyour MYSQL server name to the config file.

Cheers,

Wonderful plugin. Just wonderful…

I would like to change one thing with your help. How can I limit this to just my user profile. Limiting it to user level 10 won’t work because I have other 10’s that I do NOT want to let in the db.
